Ceftriaxone Sodium for Intramuscular Injection
Dosage (Adults)
Type of Infection: Uncomplicated Gonorrhea (cervical/urethral, pharyngeal and rectal)
Route: IM
Dose: 500 mg monotherapy
Frequency: Single dose
Reconstitution (for intramuscular use)
Pain on intramuscular injection is usually mild and less frequent when Ceftriaxone Sodium is administered with 1% Lidocaine solution. Reconstitute with 1% Lidocaine as follows:
Ceftriaxone Vial Size: 0.25 g x 2 vials
Lidocaine volume to be added to vial: 0.9 mL x 2 vials
Approximate total volume: 1.0 mL per vial
Approximate average concentration: 0.25 g/mL per vial
*Shake well until dissolved
*Solution should be reconstituted immediately before use
Administration
Whether two doses of 250mg or one dose of 500mg are administered is a decision left to the clinicians’ discretion. Please refer to product monograph for administration recommendations.
The reconstituted solution of Ceftriaxone Sodium should be administered by deep intra-gluteal injection, preferably the ventrogluteal muscle.
It is recommended to use a 21 gauge, 1.5″ needle with a 3cc syringe.
Stability and Storage Recommendations
Ceftriaxone Sodium for Injection sterile powder should be stored between 15°C and 30°C and protected from light.
