Health Unit Staff Support Pride Month by Walking in Local Parades
May 31, 2024
Pride events celebrate the progress that has been made towards 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion and the protection of human rights. In addition, Pride is a platform to acknowledge and reflect on the past and present discrimination and marginalization of persons and groups with 2SLBGTQIA+ identities.
Established events continue to grow in numbers, such as Pride in Brockville, Perth, Kemptville and Carleton Place in June and Gananoque in July.
Employees from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit have walked in Pride Parades in many of the communities across Leeds, Grenville and Lanark and will continue that activity this summer.
Stigma directed towards persons of 2SLBGTQIA+ identities creates an environment where their personal health outcomes are at risk based on limited access to services, education, employment, housing and social inclusion. These health inequities have the potential to be changed by reducing stigma through social engagement.
