Brockville Campus Takes a Smoke-Free Stand
Brockville, Ontario – Fourth year nursing students supported by the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit and Leave the Pack Behind (a provincial organization focused on helping young adults quit smoking) had a successful day hosting a One Day Stand for a Smoke-Free Campus at St. Lawrence College last Wednesday. They joined over 17 other Ontario post-secondary campuses with their advocacy for a healthier environment. McMaster University is already smoke-free, and both Ottawa U and Western recently announced intentions to do the same very soon.
To promote the 1 Day Stand and encourage conversation, the students had a “Breath of Fresh Air Bar” where gum and mints were distributed to students and staff. Participants could show their support for a smoke-free campus by engaging in social media, posting the names of loved ones impacted by smoking on the memory wall, or signing a petition.
Other ways that students and staff can get involved include encouraging conversations about the impacts of smoking on campus. Also, promoting resources for those interested in quitting smoking or managing cravings while on campus. Contact your local health unit for more details, initiatives, and services to assist with quitting within our Helping Smokers Quit section.
“I love to see students on campus who are passionate advocates and take a stand for what they believe in. I think it’s important to promote a healthier lifestyle and this campaign is an excellent way to do just that! These young ladies were a pleasure to work with and very professional. It can be very hard for people to take the first steps towards quitting smoking, and having this type of support and encouragement from peers goes a long way.”
