May 2019 – Elementary School E-Bits

For Administrators and Educators

New Process for Language Express Referrals. The process for referring children in JK to Language Express will be different in the fall of 2019. Referrals for children in JK will only be accepted directly from parents or legal guardians. We encourage JK teachers to use speech and language milestone checklists to support conversations with parents about their children’s development. Checklists are available at www.language-express.ca. If the teacher and parent agree that a referral to Language Express is warranted, then the parent must call Language Express to refer the child. We want to support you in encouraging parents to refer children who can benefit from our services. Please contact Language Express at 1-888-503-8885 if you have any questions about this change to the referral process. As a reminder, the deadline for referrals for children in Junior Kindergarten is November 30. This means that children born in 2015 must be referred (by their parents!) by November 30, 2019.

For Families

Lyme Disease is Preventable. Ticks that may carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease are now found throughout our region. As temperatures rise above 4°C ticks become active and begin to look for a blood meal. While not all ticks carry the bacteria, if an infected tick bites you and remains attached for over 24 hours you may be at an increased risk of getting Lyme disease. Lyme disease is preventable. Always do a tick check when you return from the outdoors and remove ticks promptly. For more information visit www.healthunit.org.
