Student Public Health Inspector – Brockville

Summer Practicum Position

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has an opening for one, Student Public Health Inspector working in our Brockville Office. This position is being offered to an individual who has completed their academic requirements in 2024 and requires practicum experience. The position is from June 17, 2024 to August 30, 2024. The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, serves the municipalities of Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Counties.

The goal is for the Student PHI to obtain training relevant for certification by shadowing and assisting Staff Public Health Inspectors with their workload. Under the guidance of Certified Public Health Inspectors, the students will perform inspections that are judged to be commensurate with ability and experience while assuring that the objectives of the Board of Certification are being achieved.

This practicum will provide field experience in the following program areas: Investigation of Diseases of Public Health Significance,; Outbreak Management, Infection Prevention and Control Rabies investigation; Food Safety, Safe Water including drinking water and recreational water, Health Hazards and Emergency Management. The PHI candidate will work with their Certified Public Health Inspector mentor to ensure that the objectives of the Board of Certification are achieved. 

Hourly Rate: $20.23 per hour, plus four percent, (4%), vacation pay, working 70 hours in a biweekly pay period.

Required Qualifications:

  • Incumbent must be enrolled in an educational institution in Canada that has an approved environmental health program, leading to certification as a public health inspector;
  • Demonstrated creativity and enthusiasm;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-direction, and flexibility;
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team;
  • Current immunization in accordance with Health Unit Policy III_5-0_6;
  • Criminal Record check;
  • Class G-2 drivers licence and access to a reliable vehicle;
  • Must be a member in good standing with CIPHI(C).
