South East Health Unit is a public health agency with over 500 staff and volunteers who deliver public health programs and services to the people of the South East region. There is an immediate opening for a Director, Environmental Health.
The Director, Environmental Health (EH) is accountable for general oversight, operations and accountability of the assigned program area. They are responsible for planning, leading, and directing public health programs and services in their portfolio, in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards and agency-determined priorities. The Director contributes to organizational planning, human and fiscal management, and strategic priorities. The Director is responsible for fostering a culture that promotes effective, evidence-based, and high-quality programs and services while collaborating internally with all levels of staff and with external community partners, to achieve common goals for the better health of people and communities in the South East Health Unit (SEHU) region. They may function as a SEHU representative in community and provincial meetings, working groups and committees. They also contribute to Ministry of Health reporting requirements.
Specific components of the Environmental Health portfolio, including Healthy Environments, will be determined through collaborative discussion and organizational structures that will be established as the merger integration work progresses, and in which the successful applicant will take part. These components may include Climate Change, Emergency Preparedness, Food Safety, Safe Water, Rabies Control, Vector-Borne Diseases, and other topics in this public health portfolio area.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health or related discipline, a Master’s degree an asset. Certification by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors is required as well as a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a public health unit or relevant community health agency combined with progressive supervisory and administrative responsibility. Management experience in a unionized environment an asset.
