Unlock the Potential of Food this Nutrition Month!
March is nutrition month, and this year the Registered Dietitians at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit are focusing on four ways to unlock the potential of food.
Food unites us at the dinner table and is often included as part of cultural traditions. Food is something you can teach children about to help set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating. Throughout our lives, food nourishes and inspires us in many ways.
This nutrition month, let’s explore the potential that food has to:
- Fuel our bodies every day with meals and snacks that keep us energized and feeling healthy.
- Bring us together. We might enjoy a meal with others, share cultural traditions and foods, or include others in meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking and even gardening.
- Prevent illness and chronic diseases by enjoying a variety of “everyday” foods like vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean meats and alternatives and lower fat milk and fortified alternatives.
